I find it is very easy to explain to clients the difference between high and low quality links from both a human and machine perspective, but often extremely difficult to explain why their site can't get any good links and why (if you have no platform on or offline) that it is going to be expensive and time-consuming to get them. The notion that quality begets quality doesn't seem to make sense to them. Probably because people don't like to hear about things that are difficult and would instead prefer to buy links and submit all their commercial pages to Digg etc.
