Excellent article Dave. The first two in particular, the title and h1 are incredibly important.
I also find the meta description to be very important too, considering this is what Google displays under the search result.

I’m not sure if this would eb considered link spam as well: I do have a site on which I publish articles from a (hard copy) magazine. In the articles, companies get named and they can advertise in the paper version. Instead of naming them only, I want to offer those companies a textblock with full contact details and (email)link – for a fee, obviously.

How would you ‘rate’ that?

And in general, what about link-exchange with ‘relevant’ sites: “I link to you if you link to me”?

Yes, different country specific versions of Joomla will show different results. Google do publish a ‘book’ about how to rank it’s just people choose to ignore it
