Duplicate Content Nonesense
In the words of Google there’s no such thing as a “duplicate content penalty”. Despite this people are still horribly confused about duplicate content. In a recent forum discussion a contributor advised others to amend their articles in order to avoid a duplicate content penalty when submitting to article sites. I disagree.
If you want to make use of article syndication sites, but you are worried submitting content to these sites may in some way disadvantage your own site, stop worrying. Once an original article is published on your site and has been indexed by Google, ie it shows up in a Google search, then Google understands that to be the original source of the article.
If you choose to share your content with a wider audience through syndication your own site will not be penalised.

I must admit that I do tend to create different versions of my articles but that is only because I distribute them to some choice people who I want to give unique content to.
I have one standard version that gets blasted to all the syndicated article sites.

Totally agree with the above, Google state within their webmaster forum that sites will not be penalised, however in order to gain maximum juice from syndicated articles would it not be better to submit different versions of an article, thus ensuring the links in are from pages of unique content?

Yes, but once several sites have syndicated your content it’s not unique any more anyway….

Nice, I’m glad you’re clearing that up for people. I too have seen Google state this before too. But I agree it’s still better to have unique article content as much as possible out there.

Are you saying that Google will tag EVERY single piece of information with a date and a source as to where it saw it first ?
Google actually says on the page you point out..
“There are some penalties that are related to the idea of having the same content as another site—for example, if you’re scraping content from other sites and republishing it, or if you republish content without adding any additional value.”
So therefore there ARE some penalties to be avoided. I can reproduce someone else’s content if I were to add value to it eg: a discussion about it. So it is feasible to outrank someone for their own content if that page is then well optimised (I would guess).
I would say that there is nothing wrong with adjusting your content if you are submitting to seperate sources/sites – but I wouldn’t have sleepless nights over it.

Perhaps it depends on your definition of penalty. In my opinion your site won’t benefit from re-publishing someone else’s work, but I don’t see that as a penalty, ie I don’t believe other original material (pages) on your site would be punished.

This makes perfect sense as your own site would have originating content on it first. Now how would that apply for someone who may be re-posting your articles via an rss stream on their website? The content would be second hand, but would it still contribute to the overall worthiness of your site for having abundant content?

Interesting but right now we have an article up titled ‘Sweet 16 NFL Power Rankings Week 4′. It is listed under Google’s Hot List for NFL Power Rankings Week 4. Immediately to the left? The same exact article on an Asian site. Same title, text, etc (and not even a link back to us).
Google needs to put a stop to that nonsense.
