Here at Red Evo Towers we get a lot of insight into how businesses perceive the web design and development process. For the most part I’m sad to report that many businesses just don’t get it. What’s worse, many web design companies perpetuate the problem because, ah hem…., they don’t get it either.
So we thought a simple THREE step plan to website success might be of some use, and here it is.
Understand your on-line market! So many companies build a website and only then start to consider how they might get people to visit it, this is wrong. Before you even think about your spinning logo and pointless animations you need to understand how people are going to find your website. What I’m driving at is keyword research. The search words and phrases used by people looking for what you offer. You need to get this right, right at the start. In simple terms, know your market! For more info Google ‘keyword research’.
OK, so you’ve nailed keyword research and you know what people in your market search for, what next? Simple, you now need to review the websites of the companies currently dominating the search results for the phrases you want to appear for. You have to figure out how you are going to propel your website into the click zone on page 1 of Google. Are you going to be able to compete in the natural (free) rankings, or are you going to have to consider paid search or Pay Per Click? There’s no point burying your head in the sand at this stage, however tempting that might seem, you simply have to develop a strategy for website traffic generation.
OK, we’re two steps into the THREE step process but before we press on to step three let’s recap. In step one we figured out what our potential customers are typing into Google and Bing, this is called keyword research. In step two we reviewed the pages currently ranking in Google for the phrases we want to rank for, this is often referred to as competition analysis. We then used this information to develop a strategy for traffic generation.
So, armed with all this information let’s press on to step THREE.
Build a great website. Yup, this is actually the easy bit, you’ve done all the hard work and creating a great site that will generate business has all been taken care of in steps ONE and TWO. All you need to do to make a good job of step THREE is choose a great web design company to build your site based on the work you’ve already done.
Don’t fall into the trap most people fall into of building a website then reverse engineering it to work for your business. It’s the wrong approach and it’ll cause you nothing but pain.
