My good mate Phil Taylor (web guru, coding genius and general good guy) passed me an enquiry he received but couldn’t service. The email stated “If you’re interested in the job please submit a detailed recommendation list on how you would improve our site.” I tried not to bite on this but just couldn’t help myself. I just thought, what a cheek!

OK, so some of you are thinking, hold on Dave, the guy’s just looking for a quote to improve his website, what’s he supposed to do? Well yes, I see your point except I disagree. He’s actually looking to get x number of web experts to give him their expertise, for free, and if they’re lucky they might get some work from him.

But if I don’t agree with his approach, and I don’t, what’s my solution to this age old conundrum? After all, simply moaning about something without actually coming up with a workable alternative would make me a Labour politician, not a web expert.

OK, for starters clever web people don’t give you their good stuff for free. If you’re running a business and expect people to give up their good stuff for free your business is going to miss a trick. It’s much better to create a short list of great web companies in your area, pick up the phone and have a chat. Find out who they work with, get a flavour of how they work, ask for case studies, decide who you think you can work with and maybe grab a coffee with them to seal the deal.

Ultimately you need to find a company who can help your business solve a problem or improve something. Rather than going for a cold approach, like our friend above, go for the human touch, find a company with a track record and a decent portfolio but most importantly find a company you would enjoy working with.
